GDPR…shall I stop now?

Stormy waters on the horizon? Doesn’t have to be!

I panicked last week about GDPR which comes into force on May 25th and went on a fact-finding mission! It is complicated and many local businesses have no idea it even affects them. It probably affects all of them if they invoice customers. 😧

The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the culmination of 4 years of efforts to update data protection for the 21st century.

In the UK, GDPR will replace the existing Data Protection Act 1998. GDPR seeks to give people more control over how organisations use their data and introduced hefty fines for organisations that fail to comply with the rules, and for those that suffer data breaches. It also ensures data protection law is almost identical across the EU. To put it into context the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica debacle post-25th May would have cost them a $1.6bn fine!!

Luckily I discovered a free GDPR checklist from Suzanne Dibble, a leading UK lawyer in this field with a no-nonsense approach. I watched over 3 hours of her free webinars and then printed off her checklist, took a deep breath and got ticking and scribbling. I subsequently established that I urgently needed to update my Privacy Notice and Cookies policy on my website and therefore invested in her GDPR ‘pack’ with 20 legal documents you can bespoke!

It’s really important for me to have a business that my clients can rely on and trust! I will be processing my data according to the new EU laws from 25th May 2018 and you should check the companies you use are compliant too! Don’t risk going with a company that hasn’t bothered to invest in these changes. I still have some work to do but look forward to shouting ‘I am compliant’!
